About Us

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-funded organization. Therefore, all donations are tax-deductible. Since there is no fee to the student, funds are needed to purchase the instructional materials which cost $60 for a complete set of six books for a tutor and student..

Tutors are all volunteers and no one, including the Director, receives a salary. This is strictly a 100% volunteer program.

Currently, we have 228 students being taught by 128 community volunteer tutors. Our program covers the following Northern Nevada counties:

  • Carson
  • Washoe
  • Lyon
  • Douglas
  • Churchill

Florence G. Phillips

During my 3 tours of duty as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I had the experience of being a foreigner living in three countries where I could not communicate with the natives. I found how difficult it is to learn to speak, read and write in another language, not only to survive in a strange land with strange and unknown customs but, at the same time, to earn a living. After my experience with the Peace Corps, I became an AmeriCorps/VISTA Volunteer in the U.S.  I then formed the ESL In- Home Program of Northern Nevada which trains community volunteers to teach basic English to immigrants on a one-on-one basis at no cost. I celebrate the efforts of all my volunteer tutors. I salute them in their tireless commitment to help others. If you wish to make a difference and be part of the solution to break the language barrier, become a community volunteer tutor in this program.

Florence Phillips has received the following awards for her program:

      1) 2008 - Humanitarian of the Year, Nevada Appeal,

      2) 2009 - Finalist, Nevada Governor's Points of Light

      3) 2009 - Citizen of the Year, Reno Gazette Journal

      4) 2011 - Soroptomist International Ruby Award
